Cultivating Restoration and Fruitfulness
The Sohihy Projects represent the physical heart of our community restoration strategy. Located in our primary village field site, this initiative has transformed from its early roots in community health and sanitation into a sophisticated community hub. While we look forward to the full realization of our agribusiness platform and circular agriculture hub, we are incredibly proud of the established community programs that are already changing lives. At Sohihy, we aren't just growing crops; we are cultivating leadership, dignity, and economic self-sufficiency through a unified approach to education, youth development, and health.
“He is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither—whatever they do prospers.” — Psalm 1:3
From Subsistence to Sustainability
Sohihy is a picturesque village, richly blessed with natural resources, where the river meets the ocean and fertile land holds immense potential. Historically, the residents of the two main sectors—comprising roughly 240 households in the upper level and 160 in the lower level—have relied on fishing as their primary source of income, with only a small number engaging in farming on a limited scale. Despite the area's natural beauty, systemic barriers have long hindered growth. The local elementary school struggled with poor maintenance, and student attendance was sporadic due to frequent illnesses, lack of daily meals, and the absence of vital birth certificates.
Our deep involvement in Sohihy was forged in the midst of crisis. In 2019, a devastating fire swept through the village, destroying 120 homes and leaving hundreds of families with nothing. We stepped in to volunteer during the reconstruction efforts, which provided a unique opportunity to listen to the community and explore ways to contribute to long-term sustainable development in Madagascar.
Our journey in Sohihy did not begin in the fields, but with the well-being of the people. We started by prioritizing village health and hygiene, facilitating the construction of bathrooms and organizing regular, community-wide cleaning initiatives to foster a culture of dignity and wellness. As the foundation of health was laid, we moved into supporting education, celebrating the graduation successes of our local students and establishing the groundwork for what would become a regional center for development. We recognized that before we could introduce modern agribusiness, we had to invest in the character, health, and academic success of the community.
The foundation of our work in Sohihy was built through the formation of a dedicated village committee, bringing together community elders, local representatives, and our team in a spirit of shared ownership. This partnership has birthed a variety of initiatives designed to weave a stronger social fabric between households and neighboring villages. From essential hygiene and sanitation projects to environmental stewardship and vibrant community events—such as soccer tournaments, village-wide clean-ups, and compassionate food and clothing drives—these efforts celebrate the community’s identity during milestones like Independence Day and Christmas, proving that unity is the prerequisite for lasting growth.
Today, Sohihy is a thriving ecosystem of interconnected projects that address the holistic needs of the community. We celebrate the success of our established programs:
Community Outreaches & Village Unity
One of our greatest achievements is the spirit of unity we have fostered. Our large-scale community outreaches now serve as a bridge, uniting several surrounding villages in shared celebration, and mutual support. This regional approach has broken down isolation and built a stronger, more resilient community network.
education & youth development
Through our Student Empowerment Program (SEP), our community center has become a vital hub for holistic growth. We empower the next generation not through direct tuition aid, but by providing specialized teacher training, intensive student tutoring, and a rich array of extracurricular activities.
Since implementing this program, the transformation has been profound: the elementary school graduation rate has soared from a staggering 3% to a consistent 95–100% each year. Most importantly, as the village committee and local educators take ownership, these results are being achieved with less and less direct assistance from our team. This character-focused mentorship ensures that students have both the academic support and the spiritual foundation necessary to succeed and lead independently.
Community health & Clean water
Restoration at Sohihy includes the vital foundation of health. We have facilitated the development of a maintenance program for village wells that serve both the agribusiness projects and the local families, ensuring these existing resources remain functional and safe. Furthermore, we have partnered with the village committee to maintain regular, community-wide cleaning schedules, alongside the consistent upkeep of public bathrooms and village roads to ensure a clean, dignified environment for all.
Agribusiness Platforms for Women
Building on our established community trust, we have specifically prioritized the future empowerment of mothers in Sohihy. By preparing group farming opportunities and modern agricultural training, we are creating a roadmap where women move from the daily stress of food insecurity to the stability of a surplus. This initiative is designed to be the next step in our restoration cycle, turning stable health and education into economic independence.
Student Empowerment Program (SEP)
In collaboration with Sohihy's village committee and the local elementary school, we have implemented the Student Empowerment Program (SEP). This transformative initiative elevates academic standards and fosters a brighter future through a holistic approach to rural learning.
Elevating Academic Performance: We identify specific areas of improvement for each student, providing tailored programs, personalized tutoring, and interactive learning modules. By incorporating modern educational technologies, we make the learning process both engaging and effective.
Innovating Teaching Methods: We recognize that teachers are the bridge to a child's future. The SEP provides continuous professional development, introducing innovative pedagogical approaches to empower educators with the latest tools and methodologies.
Overcoming Systemic Barriers: * Birth Certificate Advocacy: A critical challenge in rural Madagascar is the lack of legal identity. Many parents view the cost and distance to the county office as unnecessary, but without a birth certificate, a child cannot enroll in secondary school. We work to secure these vital documents to unlock the next level of education.
Empowering the Next Generation: Beyond immediate academics, we cultivate critical thinking, curiosity, and a love for learning. Since implementing this program, the elementary school graduation rate has soared from 3% to a consistent 95–100% each year.
Teaching in Sohihy
Teacher Support & Housing: Local teachers live on the school property in houses that are in desperate need of repair—a responsibility often beyond the means of the parents. Currently, these educators rely on small vegetable gardens and chickens to survive, as government and parental pay is frequently delayed. This financial strain often forces teachers to fish or farm during school hours, putting the children's education on hold. Our goal is to raise the necessary funds for house repairs and consistent teacher support to ensure they can remain in the classroom
Soccer Club
Each year, we host a signature regional soccer tournament in Sohihy designed to unite surrounding villages and foster collaborative development. Despite the extreme logistical challenges—including the lack of electricity, running water, and transportation limited to canoes or long treks on foot—we persist in organizing these events. Our "field" may be uneven and we face a severe scarcity of soccer shoes, uniforms, and balls, yet the joy of the teams is uncontainable. We have observed profound growth in character and maturity among the participating youth, proving that sports-based mentorship in Madagascar is a powerful tool for sparking hope and unity among the next generation.
